“On the morning of the eleventh of July, 1863, I met the sergeant in charge of the squad guarding us. I requested that he take me to the Taylor House Hospital, telling him I was anxious to see whether any of our Gettysburg boys of the Eighty-seventh were wounded and how they were getting along…When we arrived I inquired of the Confederate officer in charge of the hospital if any of the Eighty-seventh Pennsylvania were in the hospital. He replied there was one who was badly wounded, and at that time, delirious and said he would take me to him. When I came to the bed I saw it was Jack Skelly and that he was far gone. He did not recognize me and the surgeon said he had not long to live. He died the next day.”
