On the one hand Im grateful to be able to holiday in a beautiful place when some people have no prospect of a holiday ever. On the other hand, we have spent our hard earned money on this and if its less than perfect surely I dont have to just grin and bear it? The hotel is beautiful (architect Kosta Michaelides knows his job) but 4 star it definitely is not. Staffs English is so bad you cannot even get more tea or coffee for your room, and everything happens SO slowly that service is almost non-existent. 2 guests had all their dollars stolen out of the safes in their rooms. And altho the sea is a few steps away and the beaches heavenly, you cant walk in and swim due to the sea urchins. Worst of all was the riding - we are to blame for allowing our dreams and the airbrushed brochures to beguile us, but OMG those horses! No actual sores or lameness (you can bet I checked all of that) but they had a 3yr old pony ready for Carl and even after they met all 95kg of Carl they did not change their minds!! I stayed behind to sort out a goat-lamb not suckling (successfully) while Carl went out on the only horse big enough for him. He cut the ride short as he said the horse just felt so tired and regrets getting on at all. We have told the hotel its not an acceptable excursion. There is no SPCA in Zanzibar and apparently only 1 vet (I was trying to get the hotel cats neutered) but I will follow up with Tanzanian mainland people about these horses when we get back. The guy was full of excuses about tourists complaining the horses are thin, but the horses needing to be thin (like Arabs) so they can work. Well theres lean and then theres rescue case cruel and I can tell the difference. These are real beasts of burden and I see no reason for holidaymakers to add to their burdens; it was sad. Overall this country is Africa and there seems to be no sense of any need to improve or learn. Its dirty, slow and worst of all apathetic and its a hell of a pity as its beautiful and needs a good tourism income. Im not sorry we came, and am working well on my tan and my sleep, but there is just so much wasted potential I am frustrated every moment. Hakuna Matata is not a sweet little ditty, it is a sugar coated relax, who cares a damn
