On the same day Reggie Harper was charged with killing his 1-year-old son, another Brooklyn Park father, Dennis Taylor, allegedly injured his 2-month-old to the point where the baby is brain dead. According to felony assault charges filed today in Hennepin County, shortly after midnight on December 12, Brooklyn Park police dispatched to a call regarding a baby in distress located Taylors child lying on the floor unable to breathe. Taylor told cops he fed the child and placed him in his car seat to sleep before leaving the room, and when he came back, his son was not able to breathe and had vomited. But doctors at Childrens Hospital found the child had a severe brain injury. They also found evidence of a prior brain injury. According to Dr. [Alice] Swenson, the severity of the brain injury was the result of trauma consistent with abuse and she could find no other medical explanation for the trauma, the complaint says. Dr. Swenson noted that the type of brain injury [the child] suffered was the type of trauma associated with a violent acceleration-deceleration event, such as might occur if a baby is shaken or thrown. The complaint notes that the childs life is only being sustained by machines. Taylor is currently in custody. The complaint says that because his son wont recover, authorities are asking for higher bail than usual. Meanwhile, a judge set Harpers bail at $2 million. Hes due back in court next month.
