On the whole I have to say that I like Strava. I will never get - TopicsExpress

On the whole I have to say that I like Strava. I will never get any KOMs but it does enable me to track and monitor my own progress and riding, That being said it does also mean that at times I will push myself. I am for the most part a MTBer so the dangers of the road are minimal in my riding. Obviously thought MTBing has its own inherent dangers and I know I have come very close to them myself. I have often found though that my best times are set when I am not trying so hard and I am just enjoying the ride, those times when I am pushing myself I will go past my own limitations and end up loosing speed / time. So most of the time I try to go out and just enjoy my riding and hope for a new PR All of this though is based on my personality. I have seen people doing the same trail over and over again to try and set a better time for a give segment, at the expense of just having a ride, this is were Strava can be running the soul of cycling from my point of view. From a safety stand point, yes Strava encourages us to go faster, try harder and this can mean taking risks, some unnecessary which will put us in harms way. I dont think this has changed though from the days when people would sprint to a particular sign or lamppost, or race down the same hill at the same time on the original Klunkers and then MTBs as they became. The difference now is that we can do it on our own and measure it very accurately, no grey areas, it is all documented nice and clearly in hours, mins and secs. Life is a series of choices, any one of those can put us in danger. We just have to work out what is important to us. Strava has a place, the importance in your life is solely based on the importance you lend to it. If you feel as though you are being placed in an unsafe situation by those around you, then it is your choice to remove yourself from that situation and unfortunately sometimes those people. Thank you for giving us the time and opportunity to discuss this topic.
