On the whole I sort of liked it, there were bits that were brilliant & made me laugh out loud but there were also scenes that were wince inducing. The cinematography is superb and makes Rye really shine, the music I find is a little annoying but ok. The Padre and Georgie were very good, and wee wifie and Mapp were great. I even liked Irene and her lipstick. Not so keen on Diva, Mrs Wyse or any of la domestiques (yet). The biggest issue for me though was Anna Chancellor; apart from the last scene where she was impressive she seemed to deliver all her other lines wrong - strange, flat & devoid of any energy - as though she was reading directly from the script and didnt really have her heart in it. Give it some oomph and menace woman! Try raising or lowering your voice once in a while. For most of the first programme she was not the powerful, scheming & impressive Lucia from the books, instead a slightly bored & languid imposter took her place.
