On this Memorial Day Sunday, my mind wanders away to those whove gone before. Of course I think of my father, from whom I learned much, as well as my grandparents and other family members as well as friends. But I also now reflect upon one of the dearest and most valued of friends I ever had - Michael Shallow. Michael was a good 55 years older than I, but I always thought of him as kind of like an older brother whom I loved with all my heart. Michael did it all, saw it all, travelled everywhere and could reminisce just like he had done it the week before. When Michael passed away a year ago this month, his loving family asked me to read a poem called Ithaka at his funeral, an honour of my lifetime. It so appropriately described Michaels journey on this earth. Michaels journey was indeed a long one, filled with adventure and discover. His thoughts were always raised high, and excitement stirred his spirit and body. He never brought Poseidon inside his soul. Every harbour he entered seemed to be a new one. His body indeed was old and bent over by the time he reached the island, but he was wealthy beyond measure because Ithaka made him rich! I love you and miss you, Michael. Please make sure that, as you wished it for yourself, Maestro R. Strauss has one of his tone poems on the stand for when you greet me at the island.
