On this beautiful sunny morning I feel a moan coming on. Why does no one pay for anything with cash anymore? People literally pay for everything whether its a packet of chewing gum or a pint with bloody cards these days. I know this is a modern speedy 21st century type of thing. But the fact of the matter this doesnt speed things up it slows it down. I stand behind people in wait rose who have a small basket of shopping and the girl behind the counter runs everything through and announces the total, then the purse is dug out (never in advance) and the scrabbling starts as they try to pull the card from its snug little home. Then the inevitable reward card is asked for. 5 mins has now passed and its finally my turn. Thats 14.95 please, 20 quid passed straight across, no reward card, 5.05 change. Done in under 30 seconds. We must run one of the only pubs that doesnt take cards but pressure is mounting. Im resisting this change but Im sure the time is going to come. I tell you what , you look forward to waiting for your drinks a lot longer in the future. We were flat out last night. Always people at the bar but no one waited more than a minute or two for a drink. If we start taking cards this will all change. Ive heard all the arguments, people who use cards spend more. Im not having it. The people who stare at you incredulously when you tell them they cant pay for two small lemonades are usually the same people who say how much when they buy a proper round. People say you work in a cash business so youve always got cash on you to a point this is true. But even when I was monthly payed working in an office, I would never walk in a pub without enough cash for a few pints. I suppose its my working class background. I think my dad was in his 70s before he paid for anything on his card. I know the times are a changing but while they do, Ill be the person behind you in the q tutting loudly while you bypass the crisp tenner and change pocket and head slowly for your flexible friend.
