On this date in 1786 the legislature of Virginia adopted a religious freedom statute, drafted by Thomas Jefferson and introduced by James Madison. It was the model for the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. Im not sure how freedom of religion became freedom from religion in this country. When Chelsea attended Harpeth Hall in her middle school years it seemed that secular private school encouraged students of all faiths to keep and celebrated their traditions . . . including Christians. Nothing seemed to be forced. Awareness and tolerance were encouraged. In consequence students of all faiths and no faith were exposed to the religions of the world. It seemed very healthy to me. Woudnt that be a better model for public schools than the horror that now seems to reign?
