On this date in 1984, I made a life changing move. I started at the Adrian Police Department as a fulltime police officer. It was truly a leap of faith on my part as I was married with two kids and I was taking a $2,000 cut in pay. I had been a reserve police officer for 13 years and enjoyed that duty. It dawned upon me one day that I could be doing this fulltime and get paid for doing it. The early 80s were not a good time for our economy and I waited patiently for about four years for an opening to come on the department. With the retirement of PJ Schaffer, my chance came. After all the testing (written, oral and physical), I was hired. It was a Monday and I was assigned to Ralph Niles as my FTO. There was no academy available until October, so I mostly rode and observed. In the end, it turned out to be a good move, but I must admit to a few sleepless nights wondering and second guessing myself. My advice to anyone out there is dont be afraid of change. Embrace it and stick your neck out there. The thing about change is it usually works out okay.
