On this date in 1998, OSHA launches its Strategic Partnership - TopicsExpress

On this date in 1998, OSHA launches its Strategic Partnership Program focused on national and local cooperative, voluntary agreements. In the 1990s, political opposition by Congressional Republicans to regulations and calls to eliminate OSHA led to effects to reinvent OSHA and make it more effective. Then Assistant Secretary Joseph Dear formed a National Reinvention Steering Team to respond to the goals laid out for federal agencies by the Government Performance Results Act of 1993. In response to criticism that OSHA was too confrontational with employers, OSHA expanded its cooperative partnership approach to achieving compliance with health and safety standards. Unfortunately, this approach has led to decreased worker protections. For more on the results of these efforts, read the 1999 Public Citizens Health Research Group report, Reinventing OSHA: Dangerous Reductions in Enforcement During the Clinton Administration at citizen.org/documents/1494.pdf. This is clipped from the OSHA video of this May 16, 1995 press conference titled The New OSHA: Reinventing Worker Safety and Health.
