On this date in 2004, the second strongest earthquake ever recorded struck off the coast of Indonesia and set off a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that devastated coastal areas and killed over 200,000 people in eight countries and left over 100,000 missing. Operation Unified Assistance lasted until Feb 2005. Air Mobility Command flew 106 airlift missions, transported 2,943 passengers, and 3786 short tons of cargo. Two Military Sealift Command ships delivered 2308 short tons of equipment and supplies.
