On this day,70 years ago one of Germanys best Generals gave an end to his life. General Field Marshall Erwin Rommel aka the Desert Fox was forced to commit suicide because he was linked to the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Because Rommel was a national hero, Hitler desired to eliminate him quietly. He forced Rommel to commit suicide with a cyanide pill, in return for assurances that Rommels family would not be persecuted following his death. He was given a state funeral, and it was announced that Rommel had succumbed to his injuries from an earlier strafing of his staff car in Normandy. His Afrika Korps was never accused of war crimes, and soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Gfm Rommel is my personal favourite WW2 commander and I always visit his grave in Herrlingen every October on the Rommel remembrance day. This year the Remembrance day is scheduled for the 19th. I will give another report about it.
