On this day in 1906, the new Seattle Public Library opened its doors thanks to a generous gift from Mr. Andrew Carnegie. During the proceedings, Vice-Chairman, Mr. Charles E. Shepard said The doors of every Carnegie library are open to all who choose to enter without distinction of race, or creed, or station, or condition in life. It is interesting to note that during the construction, The Seattle Daily Times (September 23, 1904) reported that the building was sinking and it was later blamed on the Great Northern Railway tunnel that was being constructed under downtown Seattle.
