On this day in 1938: MGM recording session for The Wizard of Oz. Judy, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Buddy Ebsen recorded the three different versions of Were Off To See The Wizard. Ebsen would famously be replace by Jack Haley, and all of Ebsens solos had to be re-recorded. However, in the group songs (such as Were Off To See The Wizard) in which the three (and four) principles are singing together, its still Ebsens voice that is heard. MGM realized they didnt need to bring everyone back together for more recording sessions, but rather just had Haley record the solo bits (Id be gentle as a lizard etc.) Also recorded on this day was If I Were King Of The Forest - Lahrs fabulous solo, with an assist from the other three of course!
