On this day in 1941: Judy appeared on The Chase and Sanborn Hour, NBC Radio, broadcast from Fort Ord (near Monterey, California). The show was planned before the attack (on this day as well) on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Obviously, the show was interrupted many times for news bulletins. Judy sang Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart and performed with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. You can listen to Judys segment of the show, and her version of Zing! here (just scroll down to 1941): thejudyroom/radiosongs.html Also on this day, something happened that went forgotten until the late 1990s when the late Eric Hemphill discovered the information: Judy was made an honorary Corporal. The appointment was revealed in a copy of the Esprit de Corps newsletter for the First Medial Regiment at Fort Ord. Judy is on the cover receiving her stripes and citation. In part, the newsletter reads: Judy Garland Joins Regiment - Star Made Honorary Corporal in H Company Dont crowd men. Stay in line. You cant all transfer to Company H at once. Thats the sentiment here when news leaked out that Judy Garland, lovely star of radio and screen, was given an honorary corporalcy in Company H of the 1st Medical Regiment. The minute Miss Garland came on the scene all eyes fastened on her. She was dressed in an attractive black and white outfit. Major Martin had Judy line up with a squad of men from company H, and the 1st Sergeant Marshall Hummel pinned corporals stripes on each sleeve of Miss Garlands sweater. A corporals warrant was then presented while a pair of identification tags were placed around her neck. #judygarland #pearlharbor #charliemccarthy #edgarbergen #thejudyroom
