On this day in 1965, #India intoxicated in their arrogance of power attempted to attack West #Pakistan at 3:00am, without a formal declaration of war. Around 50,000 Indian soldiers crossed the international border of West Pakistan and launched an offensive against #Lahore and #Sialkot. Little did #Delhi realise that 17 days later they would be begging infront of the United Nations for a ceasefire. 24 hours after an embarrassing defeat at the Battle of Chawinda, India formally asked the United Nations for a ceasefire and on 10 January 1966, the Tashkent Deceleration was signed between the two countries. The Soviets, represented by Premier Alexei Kosygin moderated between President Muhammad Ayub Khan and Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The Indians incurred the most losses during the entire war, with more than 120 Indian tanks lost (compared to 40 Pakistani tanks), 110 aircraft lost (compared to 18 PAF losses) and a heavy Naval attack at Dwarkha. Under the deceleration, it compelled Pakistan and India to restore their national boundary and the 1949 ceasefire line in Kashmir. This eventually led to dissatisfaction and protests against the Ayub Khan leadership.
