On this day in 1967, The Doors made their first and only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Though the band had made television appearances before, this was by far their highest profile performance at the time. Closing the show and immediately following comedian Rodney Dangerfield, The Doors would play two songs: a somewhat tepid performance of “People Are Strange” and their chart topping hit Light My Fire. The latter performance has become one of the most talked about moments in Sullivan Show history, when Jim Morrison failed to yield to network censors and sang the lyric “Girl we couldn’t get much higher” as written. The producers of the show were quite upset that the alleged drug reference had made it to air and promised The Doors that they would never play Sullivan again. Jim Morrison reportedly responded Hey man. We just did the Sullivan Show. Ironically, a year later, Sly and the Family Stone performed the song “I Want To Take You Higher” without incident. youtu.be/2euBN3gbKc8
