On this day in 1967, the Citywide Citizens Action Committee holds “People’s Tribunal,” a mock trial of the city police officers charged in connection with the fatal shooting of three black men (Aubrey Pollard, Carl Cooper and Fred Temple) killed on July 26 at the Algiers Motel on the city’s west side during the rebellion. The tribunal is led by Wayne State University graduate students Dan Aldridge and V. Lonnie Peek, Jr. and is held at Central Congregation United Church of Christ (soon to be known as the Shrine of the Black Madonna). The group secures legal advice and assistance from attorney and activist Milton R. Henry and Kenneth V. Cockrel, Sr. African-American writer John O. Killens and Rosa Parks, the “mother” of the modern civil rights movement, serve as jurors. Carolyn Cheeks (Kilpatrick) serves as stenographer for the proceedings. It attracts hundreds of people, including journalists from Sweden and France. On This Day: African American Life in Detroit
