On this day in Lamont history 6 August 1879 Johann von Lamont died, astronomer and magnetician, born at Braemar, 13 December 1805. His father, a Custom-house officer, belonged to an old but impoverished family, and, after his death in 1816, the son was removed to the Scottish Benedictine Monastery of St. 1 Mouydrain.—James at Katisbon ; where he passed with distinction through all his studies. In 1835 he was appointed Director of the Observatory of Bogenhausen, near Munich. He made numerous astronomical discoveries of great importance, and twice unconsciously observed the then unknown planet Neptune. Lamont was associated with the Royal Astronomical Society in 1837, and with the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh respectively in 1845 and 1852. In the latter year he was appointed Professor of Astronomy in the University of Munich. He was a Member of most of the scientific Academies of Europe, and among the Orders with which he was decorated were those of the Iron Crown of Austria ; of Gregory the Great (conferred by Pius IX.) ; of the Northern Star of Sweden ; and of the Crown of Bavaria, the last carrying with it a title of nobility. He wrote several important works on astronomy, etc. He never married ; and died 6 August 1879, and was buried at Bogenhausen
