On this day in Yonkers history, February 5, 1923: New York State Industrial Commissioner Bernard L. Shientag appointed Sarah McPike of 2 Elinor Place, Yonkers, Secretary of the State Department of Labor. Ms. McPike had been the executive secretary in the advertising department of the general electric works. She was well known as an organizer, speaker, Democrat, and a proponent of women’s suffrage and social legislation in New York State.
