On this day in history, July 4, 1875, Republican activist Frederick Douglass delivered a speech at an Independence Day celebration at Hillsdale. During his speech Douglass said, "If any person should ask what the colored man has to do with the 4th of July, the answer is ready. They were at Lewisburg, Ticonderoga, Quebec, Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The manly form of Major Pitcairne was brought down by the musket of the colored soldier Salem. The colored man has much to do with the 4th of July."
