On this day in history some of the following special events occurred: September 11, 1297, Scottish rebel William Wallace led a ragtag army of Scots against the English defeating them at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The victory was an important one in the history of Scotland and the British Empire. It also led to the movie, Braveheart, some 698 years later. September 11, 1903, the first race took place at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin, the world’s oldest major speedway. September 11, 1927, the St. Louis Browns broke a 21 game losing streak against the New York Yankees defeating the Yankees 6-2. A highlight for Yankee fans was Babe Ruth hit his 50th homerun on the way to 60 that year. The Yankees also won the World Series that year. The St. Louis Browns closed their doors. September 11, 1928, Ty Cobb made his last plate appearance in the major leagues. He popped out against the, you guessed it, New York Yankees, ending one of baseball’s dirtiest, racist, mean careers. No one was particularly sad to see him go. September 11,1929, San Francisco became the first city to have pedestrian street lights. September 11, 1931, Salvatore Maranzano was murdered by henchmen hired by Charles “Lucky” Luciano thus signaling the chief power shift of the New York Mafia into Luciano’s hands. Luciano was responsible for the structure of the modern Mafia and the “family system”. September 11, 1936, Franklin Delano Roosevelt dedicated “Boulder Dam” later having the name changed to “Hoover Dam”. This construction project and the resulting Lake Mead transformed the development of the Western United States providing potable water for farming AND drinking. Without the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas would not exist. Is that a good thing? September 11, 1941, construction on the Pentagon began. It was completed January 15, 1943. Ironically, on September 11, 2001, exactly 60 years later, the Pentagon was one of four targets of terrorist attacks on the American homeland. September 11, 1950, the comic strip “Beetle Bailey” debut. I thought it has always been a part of my life, I was right. September 11, 1962, Ringo Starr replaces Pete Best as the drummer of the Beatles. I wonder what Pete Best is doing now. September 11, 1965, the 1st Cavalry Division of the United States Army was dispatched to Vietnam. This did not look good back then, it looks worse even now. September 11, 1985, Pete Rose got his 4192 hit eclipsing Ty Cobb’s record. Rose would later be banned for life for betting on the Cincinnati Reds while he was managing them. FREE PETE ROSE. September 11, 2001, the United State homeland was attacked by Terrorists associated with Al Quiada. Both the North and South Buildings of the World Trade Center were hit by hijacked aircraft, the Pentagon was hit, and a fourth hijacked plane crashed prior to hitting designated targets in Washington, D.C. The world changed! The Historical events listed above are of some importance in the history of the world or like 9/11 of 2001 history changing. But for me, even 9/11/2001 cannot hold a candle to the following date. September 11, 1987, Caitlyn Corbin was born in Union City, Indiana. Until that day, I did not know what parental love meant. I did not know what was REALLY important in life. I did not appreciate the meaning of “father”, or the meaning of “daughter”. There are the days in life that forever are in your memory bank….the day of your birth, your first date, your marriage, and your death, but there is NO date in your life more important, more life changing, more challenging, and more loving, than the day of the birth of your child. So all those dates above are important, and not so important but, I am sorry you do not hold a candle to the importance of September 11, 1987. Happy Birthday, my sweet Caitlyn, I am so proud of who you are and what you have done to contribute to this world………………. I love you.
