Lt. John F. Kennedy, future U.S. President, saves all but two of his crew 1947 – A British South American Airways Avro Lancastrian airliner crashes into a mountain during a flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Santiago, Chile. The wreckage would not be found for over 50 years. 1973: Dozens die in resort fire More than 30 people die in a fire which gutted the Summerland leisure resort on the Isle of Man. 1984: Euro Court condemns phone-tapping A Surrey businessman who accused the police of illegally tapping his phone is celebrating after a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. 1990: Iraq invades Kuwait More than 100,000 Iraqi soldiers backed up by 700 tanks invade the Gulf state of Kuwait in the early hours of this morning. 2007 Mattel recalled nearly a million Chinese-made toys from its Fisher-Price division that were found to have excessive amounts of lead.
