On this day in music history: November 2, 1982 - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me by Culture Club is released in the the US (UK release date is on September 1, 1982). Written by George ODowd, Roy Hay, Michael Craig, and Jon Moss, it is the third single by the British pop band fronted by lead singer Boy George. It is the bands third single release in the UK first after their first two singles Im Afraid Of Me and White Boy fail to make an impact. Shortly after its release, it begins receiving airplay on BBC 2 radio, finding favor with audiences charmed by its mixture of pop, reggae, and lovers rock topped by Georges blue-eyed soul vocals. British audiences will get their first look at the band when they perform the song on Top Of The Pops. The public and the media become immediately fascinated by Boy Georges androgynous look and style of dress, as well as by the song itself which will climb to number one on the UK singles charts spending three weeks at the top. On the heels of its British chart success, it is picked up for release in the US by Epic Records. Entering the Hot 100 at #80 on December 4, 1982, it will steadily climb the charts, and by late March of 1983 will spend three weeks at #2 on the Hot 100, peaking at #39 on the R&B singles chart. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me is the first of six consecutive top 10 singles Culture Club will score in the US charts during 1983 and 1984.
