On this day in music history: November 28, 1981 - Lets Groove by Earth, Wind & Fire hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 8 weeks, also peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 19, 1981, and peaking at #3 on the Club Play Chart on December 12, 1981. Written by Maurice White, Wayne Vaughn and Wanda Hutchinson Vaughn, it is the seventh chart topping single for the veteran R&B band led by Maurice White. Following the somewhat muted commercial response to the bands previous album Faces, White will collaborate with songwriter Wayne Vaughn, a member of The Brothers Johnsons touring band and his wife Wanda Hutchinson Vaughn, the lead singer of The Emotions. Issued as the first single from the bands eleventh album Raise!, the song will restore the band to commercial prominence on both the pop and R&B charts. Groove will top the R&B charts longer than any of their previous chart topping singles. Also a huge crossover pop smash, it will peak at #3 on the pop singles chart, holding that position for five weeks behind Olivia Newton-Johns Physical and Foreigners Waiting For A Girl Like You which will have a hammerlock on the top two chart positions during the holiday season. It is nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. Shortly after the original mixs release, the single will also be issued as an extended dance remix (initially in the US only as a promotional 12 single to club and radio DJs) that will also become a big hit on club dance floors. It will be issued commercially in the UK and Canada only before being belatedly issued on CD in 1994 on the Japanese compilation album Dance Tracks. Lets Groove is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
