On this day in music history: October 26, 1973 - Helen Wheels by Paul McCartney & Wings is released. Written by Paul and Linda McCartney, it is the first track to emerge from the sessions that produce the Band On The Run album. The songs title is a word play on the term hell on wheels which is also the nickname for Paul & Lindas Land Rover. It will be issued initially as a stand alone single and on US pressings of Band On The Run (at the suggestion of then Capitol Records exec Al Coury), though it will not be included on the original UK verson of the album. The single is backed with the non-LP B-side Country Dreamer. Dreamer is recorded a year before in October of 1972 and was intended to be included on the Red Rose Speedway album, but is left off when McCartney decides to release the album as a single LP rather than as a double. Entering the Billboard Hot 100 at #66 on November 24, 1973, Helen Wheels will peak at #10 on January 12, 1974, and at #12 on the UK singles chart the same month.
