The armed forces of Singapore and Indonesia should move beyond the warship-naming incident and, instead, focus on rebuilding ties, said Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen. As neighbours we benefit much when relations with each other are good. And this is also relevant to the relations between the SAF and the TNI, the SAF will work with TNI to improve relations and we will find ways to move beyond this incident and to mend and repair ties which have been affected. Responding to TNI chief General Moeldokos recent clarifications that he was misquoted as apologising for the naming of warship, Dr Ng said: “We accept his words on camera at face value, that they have acknowledged that they have stirred up emotions. Im confident that if we treat each other with mutual respect and regard, we can regain the trust and confidence between the SAF and the TNI that we have built up over many decades. However, Dr Ng cautioned that this will take time. I think how we move forward will depend on our ability to treat each other with mutual respect and regard as sovereign equals.
