On this the third anniversary of my bone marrow transplant to recover from the effects of high dose chemotherapy administered to fight multiple myeloma, I offer a lesson and not a photo. Im one of the worlds best procrastinators. I learned three years ago nothing clarifies the meaning of life or the meaning of “life’s work” for a person like standing at the brink and peering into the abyss. It was shortly after my release from City of Hope I shot one of my most dramatic photos ever, for which I won a blue ribbon at the OC Fair in black and white landscapes. In 2012 I climbed four mountain summits one week to reach my 100th Sierra Nevada peak. And in 2013 I believe I had my best photographic year yet. But there’s no need to get cancer to get motivated. Figure out what your best at and do it, because that is what you will most enjoy, and that is what you are meant to do. If you have to, imagine being told by a nurse “yes, it is hard to face your own mortality.” Mortality, I choose to procrastinate at that. Photography is my life’s work. - Mitch Miller
