On top of the world: Hikers Calvin Sneed and Nick Porter at the antenna farm on top of Cross Mountain, above Lake City, TN. The summit of Cross Mountain is a peak known as "The Flag Pole," the transmitting home of the legendary WOKI-FM, 100.3 MHz, Oak Ridge-Knoxville. If you remember this former station at 100.3, you know you can pick it up more than 150 air-miles in all directions because of its height, elevation 3,534 above sea level and 2,000 feet above average terrain, probably the highest point in the Cumberland Mountains in East Tennessee. I grew up with FM 100 from Kingsport to Chattanooga, and visiting the Flag Pole has been on my bucket list for at least 40 years. If you look past the tree in the second picture, you can see the entire outline of the Great Smoky Mountains along the horizon in the far distance.
