On your bike for the 2013 Goulburn Grand Prix Cycle Challenge Following the success of last year’s event, the Goulburn Grand Prix Cycle Challenge is on again on Sunday, September 22. Now it its fourth year, the Goulburn Grand Prix Cycle Challenge (GGPCC) is a great day out, with various rides that cater for all ages and abilities. This year’s events will again be starting from Carr Confoy Park in East Goulburn. The events include a 4km family ride on paths around Goulburn Golf Course, a 25km ride to Gundary, a 60km ride to Windellama, and the Grand Prix 85 – an 85km round trip that takes in Windellama and Bungonia and follows the course used for the first Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix held in 1924. The event was officially launched at the Tour de France night at the Greengrocer on Clifford on Saturday, July 20. Over 100 people attended the evening and enjoyed a four-course meal and Tour de France general knowledge games where thousands of dollars worth of prizes were given away. Speakers on the night included Peter Mowle from Southern Tablelands Cycling Inc, who spoke on the potential for recreational cycle tourism in the district as well as people from the industry representing various cycling products. Manager of the Greengrocer on Clifford Con Toparis said the Goulburn Grand Prix Cycle Challenge is a great annual event. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people that haven’t tried cycling at that level to participate in a large ride on a public road with fellow riders,” Mr Toparis said. “You can ride by yourself anytime, but this is a chance to ride with other riders in a wind break and with the safety of Traffic Control.” Keen cyclist and Goulburn Mulwaree General Manager Chris Berry said he was also looking forward to this year’s event, which promotes cycle safety and the shared use of our roads. ‘I’ll be putting my hand up again for the Grand Prix 85km challenge again and the cake and fruit at the Bungonia Hall,” Mr Berry said. ”This is a great opportunity for the whole family to get involve with a ride distance suitable for all levels of ability. There will also be a skills session and helmet checks for younger riders. So dust off the cobwebs from the bike in the shed and join in the fun.” The first event was held in 2010 and has since become an annual event on Goulburn’s cycling calendar. All profits from the event are donated to local and national charity organisations and local projects. The event has raised money for Abbeyfield Goulburn, Goulburn BMX community project and the Heart Foundation. This year the event is raising money for the Goulburn Rotary Club and their gym in Victoria Park project. The event is held as part of NSW Bike Week. It is a community not-for-profit charity event run by a working party made up of members of the community and supported by Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
