OnWomans Day some thoughts from For Gods Sake ! The status of women in India was a lot better during the Vedic period. Women were encouraged to learn the Vedas and even participated in the Yagnas. But when Manu wrote his Laws, the Manusmriti, he decided to lay down rigid rules for society to abide by. How caste lines are to be drawn, what are the penalties for inter-Varna marriages etc. He prescribed that Women are not to be allowed to learn to read or write. There is debate if there was just one Manu or were there many. There is also debate of when exactly Manusmriti was codified, around 500 BCE or before. But the status of Indian women did take a beating thanks to Manu and is yet to get back to the glory days. Any objections to that view ?
