Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), aka Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. In its later stages it often leads to total paralyzation. The Ice Bucket Challenge is intended to raise awareness of the disease and encourage people to donate to ALS research.
