Once again, Mr. Reed shows why he is, in my opinion, the only trustworthy critic around. Every other review Ive read of The Gambler remake claims that the 1974 version was a masterpiece. No, it most definitely was not. It was, in fact, as Mr. Reed acutely says, a bomb, both critically and commercially. And despite Mark Wahlberg being an improvement over the hilariously miscast James Caan (an actor who exudes sheer stupidity as an English professor?), Im taking Mr. Reeds advice and skipping this ill-advised refurbished update. Thank you, Mr. Reed, for saving me 15 bucks. Have a great holiday, and to continue reading your spot-on reviews is one reason Im looking forward to the New Year.
