Once again we are loosing narrative now from PM to GHQ from media to common citizen everyone is obsessed with the idea of Military courts,we all are under a new illusion that hangings will end the problem of terrorism. I understand and there are no two opinions that civil courts have miserably failed to address the challenge proposed to them,the weakness of judicial system is core issue and no one has criticized post Iftikhar chaudhry Judiciary more then myself but does the solution lies in scrapping civil judicial system and replacing it with Military courts?Answer is no. If history of the world is any guide Military courts are symbol of tyranny and injustice no just system can advocate unjust judicial system. The war on terrorism is essentially a war of idea we are at war with people who are selling the idea that killings in the name of of religion is a ticket to heaven,we need to defeat this idea and primary focus has to be on the proponents of this narrative. The idea of extremism is propagated by frontline columnists,top politicians and even officers within army. Question is how can we arrest these powerful people to show that State is supreme and no individual or group can be permitted to pose larger than the State. State has failed to protect those who stood up to restore its authority,every policemen involved in 1993 operation was hunted and gunned down State did not bother to stand up,Salman taseer spoke for rights of minorities State failed to protect him,State failed to protect Benazir Bhutto,Shahbaz Bhatti and so many other former President Pervez Musharraf is facing trial for ordering operation against Lal Mosque so today no one is ready to standup for the State. Before the Military courts State has to show its seriousness and will to stand up for its citizens. Two incidents have again proved non seriousness of the State Jibran Nasir an activist received life threats from Taliban he demanded action against maulna Abdul Aziz but once again State authorities refused to attend his concerns,like wise Amir Liaquat a TV anchor in his program declared and appluded that Ahmedis enemies of Pakistan and following his program an Ahmadi boy shot dead in gujranwala the State failed to respond once again. These were two test cases for PM Nawaz Sharif and GHQ but both failed. Therefore,tactical steps like formation of Army courts will only create multiplicity of forums we will never be able to win this war if State remains on back foot and counter version of extremism is not allowed to be presented freely without the fear of unknown bullet.
