One Act or Thought of Kindness Daily Sets Us Free .......michael a. bengwayan..... There are two Christmas pine trees, (Casuarina equisitifolia) or what is locally known as agoho but is actually called common ironwood, in front of Benguet State Uiversitys (BSU) Marketing Center. The common ironwood is one of the strongest in the world. You can bend its branches to the ground and they wont break. Theyre about 150 years old. But theyre dead and school laborers are digging out the huge stumps now. Thyre dead because the school authorities had them cut. And I almost got into a shouting argument with one of the schools vice presidents when he ordered them killed. He said the trees were blocking the view of one school building. I retorted he did not know what he was doing he ought to go back to school. Cooler heads set us apart. We never talked again for a year. Even though he was my neighbor. Sometimes when we think we got so much edukeshun, good choices hold us down. We let go of chances that set us free. An act of kindness to human beings should extend to any creature of God. Each creature has life. Each are sacred. When we put edukeshun above learning, we retrogress. Unstoic was Epictetus when he said men are not disturbed by things, but of the view they take of things. For indeed, the very things that disturb us are not the things around us but what we do to things around us. A birds chirp, a butterfly floating, a calm wind whisper and a warm sunshine through the forest canopy, should be enough messages to us that we are a part of nature and not apart from it. But we have forgoten all about these. Because we are eduketed. When we destroy, are we not destroying ourselves? Each act of kindness to the Land, to Earth, will spell another life not for us but for those ahead. Each misdeed resorts to our doom and more so for those in the future..
