One Reason Why You Should Eat Fruits. According to a study published in Circulation (Volume 127, page 188), women with a high intake of a compound found in certain fruits and vegetables may have lower odds of suffering a heart attack. The large, long-term study followed nearly 94,000 U.S. women for 18 years and found that the 20 percent who consumed the most anthocyanins were one-third less likely to have a heart attack than the 20 percent with the lowest intake. Anthocyanins give red, blue and purple hues to certain fruits and vegetables; blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries have some of the highest concentrations. Women in the study were between 25 and 42 at the outset, and completed diet questionnaires every four years. Over nearly two decades, 405 suffered a heart attack. High anthocyanin intake -- more than three servings a week of strawberries and blueberries -- was linked to a lower risk, even when factors like overall diet, weight and exercise habits were taken into account. There is no dietary magic bullet against heart attacks. Nothing takes the place of a balanced diet and generally healthy lifestyle. But based on this study, including fruits in your meals or snacks might be a wise choice.
