So, the water woes of Kingston and St. Andrew all originate from - TopicsExpress

So, the water woes of Kingston and St. Andrew all originate from my home. Lol. No. Seriously. I kid you not... Today Rohan and I were out picking mangoes after our morning workout, when I noticed a very wet spot in the backyard. We called the gardener to come and investigate so that he could dig up the area and see if there was a busted pipe somewhere nearby, although where the water was, it wouldnt have made sense for a pipe to be there. As he dug, more and more water began to spring. Now we began speculating if there was a well that we had no knowledge of in the yard. He dug a hole about 3 feet deep at the spot that appeared to be the source, as well as a trench to get the water flowing so we could drain the water off and see the actual spot wherefrom it was actually springing. The more he dug, the more water there was. So, we decided to call the NWC, as the direction of the flow of water indicated that it was definitely not from our plumbing. It was flowing from the opposite direction of the house and all known plumbing. The representative informed us that she would make some calls and call us back to see if someone would be able to come out and investigate the leak. She called back within 10 mins to say that the VP of the NWC was sending someone shortly. (Clue number one of the enormity of the issue). Within 30 minutes of that call, a NWC crew was at our gate. (Clue number 2 of the magnitude of the issue). When they looked at everything, they made us aware that it was actually THEIR MAIN that runs from the UWI out to Old Hope Road through our yard that had sprung a leak. They informed us that they had to repair a similar leak at our neighbours home just last week! (Clue number 3 of the significance of the issue). So, think about it. If this is THEIR MAIN which supplies water to MAJOR sections of the corporate area, and it was leaking by my neighbours last week, our house this week, then...how many other places is this main possibly leaking, and how will they FIND these leaks? We were informed that these pipes have been there since the 1940s, maybe even before. Further to that, since it is their main, it must be several feet below a house foundation (which is typically 8-12 feet, I believe), and WE just happened to see this today, which means the water has been rising from below those depths quite possibly for MONTHS. So, this, my dear residents of Kingston and St. Andrew, is where all the water from the Mona Damn has gone. It is flowing below my home in my backyard, and quite possibly the back and front yards of many other unaware residential property owners. The NWC will be bringing TWO 8-man crews tomorrow to dig up our backyard and deal with the issue. I have a good mind to tell them to leave the void they plan to dig, as it will save me money in the construction of a swimming pool...
