One afternoon of this past summer, a bunch of people got together - TopicsExpress

One afternoon of this past summer, a bunch of people got together to paint a van. We used spray paint, mostly, and there were beers passed around among us. I do not drink. Generally, I do not paint, but on this occasion I spray painted just a little. I did this mostly, in an attempt to not kill the vibe. Among those contributing to this mobile piece of art, was a local chess enthusiast and artist, James Primrose. James created a cityscape, using a thin tacky material, which he cut to make into a stencil. It was then spray painted in black. James is a regular among the chess players who frequent Mocha Joe’s. He also is an enterprising young artist with his sights set on creating a print making co-operative. He calls this project, Wonky Press. You will, on occasion, see shirts printed by James on the backs of local residents. But his knowledge and experience of art extend beyond just making shirts. He attended school at Edinboro University, in Pennsylvania. James wants to create a space for people to learn the different forms of printing. He wants people to learn what type of art makes for good prints. As he explained to me, there are different printing methods. Each one has a unique style, and each one requires different techniques. There is block printing, in which you cut a pattern, often out of wood, to create a relief. And there are etching style printing processes too. James’ chess game is pretty good. He’ll sometimes get himself in trouble not taking easy prey, and thinking of the position instead of material. But I respect his talent, and his love of the game. Sometimes he and I will put a dollar on our contests. At first he put me in a bit of a hole, but I’ve pretty much evened it out. However, in the more serious matters of starting an artist’s co-operative, James says he’s looking to a grant writer to get Wonky Press off the ground. He believes it could be self-sustaining once it is established. He needs Wonky Press to have the proper equipment for printing, to have his vision become a reality. Wonky Press will go beyond just teaching techniques. It will serve as a creative outlet for experienced artists. Read More ➤ Photo by Vermont Views Magazine
