One big mystery connected with the 1955 movie CONQUEST OF SPACE, which we discussed earlier, is that when the expedition finally arrives at Mars orbit, and a cover is removed from the viewport of the lander, we see that Mars has craters! Now, nobody had ever depicted craters on Mars in any astronomical painting to that date. [The idea is that craters would have been formed early in Martian history, but would have surely been wiped over by erosion by now.] Well, about 10 years later, the first crude photos of the Martian surface from space revealed... craters. Who should get credit for putting craters on Mars in the images created for the film, and was it done through sheer ignorance, or with some other motivation?
