One cannot resist temptation to urge Mr Xi to think again. The Chinese communist leaders assertion that China tried all other political systems but only socialism was proven to be successful can sound somewhat disingenuous since it was the communist armed struggle that ultimately destroyed the constitutional republican rule of the Republic of China on mainland in the late 1940s. But it is perhaps the Japanese who will have to feel the most responsible since it was the Japanese invasion devastating the Republic of China which made it possible for the communists (who apparently werent yet sophisticated and perhaps not quite yet ready to govern, making a series of serious mistakes as alluded to by Mr Xi himself) to come to power. Before the Japanese invasion in the 1930s, it must have been unthinkable. The Chinese economy during the Nanjing decade (1927-37) was growing about as fast as the last few decades, and thus without the degradations brought by the Japanese invasion and the pre-Deng communist rule, Chinas economy would have overtaken Japans decades earlier than it actually did.
