One component of balancing the federal books, is a proper accounting of the real property that the federal government owns. You wont be surprised to know that the federal government has no ability to account for the buildings, land, parking garages, golf courses, grocery stores or other real property that the federal government has accumulated over the years. Last year, in a committee hearing, I questioned General Services Administrator (GSA) Dan Tangherlini about this glaring omission in our ability to account for what we own. A year later, the GSA has built a public online database to show taxpayers a small portion of this real property that is managed by the GSA, about 10,000 items total. This is just a small sliver of the property our nation owns. Ive included the link to the database below for your review and a link to the hearing yesterday where Administrator Tangherlini updated us on his progress. iolp.gsa.gov/iolp/NationalMap.asp We have much work to do, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction of creating more accountability and efficiency in our federal government.
