One day, I took a scorpion home unknowingly. It had inserted itself into a fold in the blanket we used during a photo shoot for an advert. ( Which is yet to pay. I hope they read this and have mercy ) I needed lots of sky and sand to capture the mood and visual effect we wanted, and the beach would have been our ideal location but time constraints would not allow for the trip. On the other hand, there were logistics issues that required that I shoot that day or forget the whole thing. We opted for an alternative, a football pitch at Jakande estate. It offered lots of sky and sand, albeit not exactly as I would have wanted, but these days theres nothing you cant do with Photoshop. So to Jakande estate we went, and work began. It was a silhouette shot, which meant that all the time, we were facing the sun. Heat. Shot after shot. About two hours later, we were sitting under a tree, going through the shots. Had to make sure we had exactly what we wanted. Theres no such thing as a re-shoot when you are working with a tight budget. Because I was not the one who packed up when we were done shooting, the blanket was not properly checked. I got home, dumped it on the floor of the bedroom, and quickly sought the solace of my bed with reckless abandon. It was a long day. Five minutes into what was already looking like a flight to Honk Kong, something creeping along my ear woke me up. I brushed it off and went back to sleep, only for it to come back to caress my chin. What! Fury prevailed over drooling eyes. I jumped off the bed. Lights on, scanned the room, and there, at one corner of the bed, my little visitor limped to safety. A scorpion! Audacious little imp! So I had been cosying up with this little devil all along. Over to the mirror. Facial examination. No swollen areas. No pain. How to get rid of it. I got an empty bottle, prodded it carefully, until it dove straight in, then I filled it with water and corked the damn thing to hell. When morning came, it was still alive. karma, o gentle karma begged on its behalf. I set the little devil free and exhorted it to go and sin no more. I however made sure I clipped that apparatus du stinger, lest it commits sin unknowingly...
