One film which made the maximum impact on me was Hrishikesh Mukherjees Satyakam based on Narayan Sanyals novel of the same name.Sanyal was a Chief Engineer with the West Bengal government.I am sure that if India is not the most corrupt country in the world it is because some people have seen Satyakam and empathised with its protagonist Satyapriya Acharya.Dharmendras performance in the film was beyond greatness.I am yet to see a better performance in cinema.THE LAST SCENE WHEN HIS wife plyaed by Sharmila Tagore taunts him that what is going to happen to her and her child after him.He had stopped a bill from being paid to a contractor because the labourers were no paid.THE CONTRACTOR SAID THAT IF HE COULD SIGN THE bill in backdate he would give the family a laundry.Taunted by his wife he agrees to sign but the wife tears the bill.Sharmila Tagore saystum jaanta the na ki main ye phaad doongi and he just smiles.That smile said so much.The husband and wife embrace each other for the first time in their life.In the novel the bill was teared up by his Guru,played by Ashok Kumar.Hrishikesh Mukherjee told me that his logic was that the man had suffered so much in life must get some reward.The tearing of the bill was that reward that at least his wife approoved of his uncompromising attitude and his legacy will live after him.
