One hundred fifty years ago, on January 18, 1864, rumors are flowing fast and furious in the camp of the 8th Missouri Infantry Regiment (C.S.). From the diary of Capt. Eathan Allen Pinnell: In camp – We have the following batch of rumors, to wit; Old Abe is dead, the copperheads of St. Louis, Mo. have rebelled, had a riot in the city and burned a large part of the city, twenty three Reg’ts, feds. have rebelled and thrown down their arms at Jackson, Miss., or some where down south. Shelby has taken Pine Bluff, Ark. Without the fire of a gun, and last, and least, there is, or was at last accounts, a mutiny among the troops at Little Rock. The above is all reported on the authority of gentlemen of undisputed veracity. Weather clear and pleasant.
