One mile north of the town square in Crockett, Texas stands Mary Allen Hall, the 1887 administration building of the former Mary Allen Seminary. The four-story Second Empire-style brick building is all that remains of this school for African-American women built by the Presbyterian Board of Missions for Freedmen headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school later became Mary Allen College. It closed in 1972. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places has a new designation - as one the Most Endangered Places in Texas. If you would like more information or assist in the preservation of the building visit Mary Allen Museum or call 936-355-6519.
