One more warm day for the Piedmont...but for the rest of us it is back to reality...and by the weekend it will be very cold everywhere! In addition...the threat for winter precipitation late in the weekend and early next week continues for areas west of the Blue Ridge. Here are some of the weather highlights for the next several days: * Initial cold front moves through today...downslope west winds and abundant sunshine will keep areas east of the Blue Ridge warm...but areas to the west will be a good 15 degrees cooler than Tuesday. * Cold air will continue to spread into the region from the west Thursday...but temperatures will still be near seasonal normals. A couple of weak weather disturbances will bring some light rain to areas mainly east of the Blue Ridge...possibly some light sleet/snow to higher elevations of the northwest North Carolina mountains and far southwest Virginia. This system is by no means a concern at all. * Following the disturbances on Thursday, the true Arctic air will spread into the region for Friday and the Arctic High will be centered over the region early Saturday. This will bring the coldest weather of the season to date so far. Friday will be very cold with high temperatures below freezing in the west and only low 40s in the east. By Saturday morning, low temperatures will be in the mid to upper teens western mountains to lower 20s east of the Blue Ridge. * A more significant series of weather disturbances will track over the cold air in place late Sunday through Monday. There will likely be enough warming across southern and eastern areas by then to keep the precipitation as rain. The biggest question is for areas west of the Blue Ridge. A wintry mix is still possible Sunday through Monday west of the Blue Ridge with snow at higher elevations. * As the storm system exits to the east by Tuesday...upslope snow showers with accumulations possible become a reality for the Alleghany Mountains of eastern West Virginia. Elsewhere...windy and very cold as another significant surge of Arctic Air moves toward the region. ***Bottom line...much colder temperatures on the way and they will be here to stay through much of next week! Stay tuned to later forecasts for the threat of winter precipitation late in the weekend and early next week, especially for areas west of the Blue Ridge.
