One my physics student asked me - How does a heart beat even after it is taken out of body ? (This is more of a Biology question that that of Physics, strange thing I studied biology first to answer it :( ) Answer - Nature worked on everything that for survival of a living being in an emergency. The reality is that Heart doesnt need any external force as supposed in Physics but only Oxygen and ATP to keep beating. Heart works on a Natures designed mechanism called as Cardiac Muscle Automaticity . Simply, muscle have a property through which it can contract and relax upon electric impulse. This electric impulse is generated within heart through SA Node(inside heart itself). SA nodes generates electric impulse without any order of brain and hence heart contracts and relax upon on it.This is called depolarization. Ca+ , Na+ and K+ always supplies ion to heart so that depolarization process should go in rythmatic manner. Brain decides how much fast hear should beat while heart itself decides to keep beating. did i explain it well ? :)
