One of my OCD moments while Im playing (especially a tune of the popish flavor) is when Im playing the melody over a tonic maj7 chord, and the melody note *is* the root of the chord. (C melody note over a Cmaj7 chord, for example). In jazz (open harmonic system), this is easily remedied with a simple quartal voicing. However, in pop music (closed harmonic system), its a pain in the butt because its hard to avoid that dreaded minor 9th interval (tertian chord voicings). It happens at the end of measure one and beginning of measure two of the verse to the Eagles tune I Cant Tell You Why on the Dmaj7 chord (words (ba)by and up all). It sounds great when there is a singer because the human voice and a keyboard are totally different timbres. But when playing the melody with the chords on piano, its a hassle. My OCD goes through the roof. https://youtube/watch?v=T2Ns6J1KWd8
