One of my dearest friends.....Sudharshan Sri Lanka names next envoy to India 21-Apr-14 04:04 PM Sri Lanka names next envoy to India Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne has been named the next Lankan High Commissioner to India Noted archeologist and Senior Advisor on Culture at the Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs, Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne, has been named the next Lankan High Commissioner in India. He will replace Prasad Kariyawasam who proceeds to Washington. The 1949-born Seneviratne ,who had received his entire university education in India, sees himself as a representative of the unbreakable archeological, cultural and historical bond between Lanka and India, especially Southern India. Having done BA (Hon.) in history at Hindu College, Delhi University, Seneviratne became the first Lankan to receive both the Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His doctoral thesis, entitled the “Social Base of Early Buddhism in Southeast India (Andhra and Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka, 3rd Century BC to 3rd Century AC,” was written under the supervision of the noted Indian historian, Prof. Romila Thapar. It was the first multi-disciplinary doctoral thesis with an international perspective. As early as 1980, he pioneered the introduction of Early Iron Age Archaeology, Environmental Archaeology, Settlement Archaeology, etc.
