One of my favorite Met memories didnt actually happen at the Met. I was making my Covent Garden debut as Mimì and ended up having to go on one performance sooner than planned, as the scheduled soprano took ill and there was no designated cover. Unfortunately, I had only had a few hours of staging and had sung only one full performance of the role before, the previous weekend at a festival in Hungary. I got the call at 9:30 a.m. for a 12:30 matinee, and I basically hopped in the shower, headed to the theatre, took a quick walk around the set, then got thrown into costume, wig, and make-up and made my way over to wait for my entrance. The head stage manager, who knew the stage management and crew at the Met (and had been told to take good care of me), came and sat beside me and commented, You seem really calm, considering the circumstances. I told him that what seemed like composure was probably my disappointment that, due to the early hour and all the frenzy, no one back in the States knew what was happening. When I was getting ready to make my entrance in Act IV a few hours later, he walked up and said, The backstage crew at the Met sends their regards. He had made a call, and although it was still very early in NY, they were already there, getting ready for a two-show day. It meant the world to me to know that my Met family was with me in spirit, and Im with my Met family in spirit today, wishing them wisdom, patience, and courage. #weareopera
